Wine Spectator Top 100 (a recent vintage)
A Pinot Noir from Masût Estate Vineyard in the Eagle Peak Mendocino AVA, California, a 23-acre hillside planted in 1997 and named for a Pomo word meaning dark, rich earth. The winery was founded in 2009 by brothers Ben and Jake Fetzer, grandsons of Fetzer Vineyards' founders, in honor of their father. Masût even helped petition for Eagle Peak's own AVA status, approved in 2014.
A recent vintage earned a place on Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines of the year, a rare honor for a small estate. Expect red and black cherry with a touch of vanilla and cedar from the oak, broad and generous on the palate. A lovely glass for duck, mushroom risotto, or a special dinner at home.
